Dutch 1920 – 2005

Constant was a Dutch painter, sculptor, graphic artist, author and musician.

He met Asger Jorn in Paris in 1946. After this meeting fantastic beasts and aggressive, frightening animal and human figures began to appear in his paintings. Constant was co-founder of the Dutch Experimental Group and also of CoBrA. Together with Christian Dotremont he was the leading theoretician of CoBrA.

From the 1970s onwards Constant applied himself to the technique of colorism. This technique is laborious. Constant painted with oil on canvas and every layer he applied then needed to dry. In this period Constant produced a mere three to four paintings per year.
